How to Prevent Freezing Pipes

Freezing weather is coming to the Dallas area, including Garland, Mesquite, Plano and Rockwall. To prevent freezing pipes, there are a few steps you can take.

Leave cabinet doors open that are below faucets to help prevent water pipes from freezing. You may also use a space heater with the cabinet doors open to keep water pipes from getting too cold and freezing.

Fill bathtub up with water in case you do have a busted pipe. You can use the water for bathing or the restroom if you water is shut off.

If a water pipe does break, find the main water cut-off and turn the water off immediately. This will prevent your home from flooding or further damage.

To keep exterior pipes from freezing, remove the water hose from all outdoor faucets. If they are left attached and water is still inside the hose. The frozen water could expand up into the faucet and cause the pipe to break.

Wile freezing weather doesn’t come as often in the Dallas area, be sure you are prepared for when it does arrive.

Another preventative is heat tape. You can purchase this at a local hardware store. While used mostly up north for longer periods of freezing weather, you can use it here when we have a long stretch of freezing weather.
