Summer is here in the North Texas area, including Plano, Garland, Rockwall and Dallas. We at Total Plumbing wanted to provide our clients with a few tips to help prevent some common plumbing issues during the summer months. We offer a variety of plumbing services and serve the entire Dallas area.
Last year we saw many broken or busted pipes due to the ground shrinking from the heat. While some people have sprinkler systems that may need repair, a greater concern is your main water line. Your main water line is often run to the house from the parkway or front of the lawn. In your typical neighborhood the pipes will come in from the street, go under the sidewalk and up to the house.
Since the parkway area is surrounded by concrete and may not be as easy to water, it is a common location for the ground to crack and shrink, which can cause a pipe break. So, tip number 1: Water your parkway. You can set our a sprinkler on your appropriate day for watering or water it by hand. Keeping this ground moist will help prevent pipe breaks, busts or cracks.
Your foundation can also affect the plumbing in your house. Also due to heat and lack of water, your foundation can shift. If the house were to shift a significant amount, plumbing pipes under the home could be broken, bent or cracked. This could cause a slab leak or an external pipe to be punctured in some form. Tip 2: water your foundation. Use a soaker hose as permitted by your water restrictions to keep your foundation moist and help prevent cracks and movement in the foundation of your home.
