5 Plumbing Mistakes to Avoid

Are you making plumbing mistakes in your home or office? If you have a leaky pipe or low water pressure, you may be waiting for disaster to happen. Some simple symptoms, like low water pressure can lead to serious issues if not properly repaired or treated. Hopefully, such an issue wouldn’t cause any real damage, but it could cause havoc to the schedule of your family. Our plumbing company serves the Dallas area and has for many years. We’re experts in the plumbing industry and have a few tips to help you prevent a disruption in the flow of life.

Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure can occur for a few reasons, but one cause is too many plumbing fixtures or plumbing appliances. The more fixtures you have in your home, the more likely you are to have low water pressure. This can also be related to things outside your home. Some neighborhoods will experience times of lower water pressure, usually during peak hours for people to be showing or watering the lawn. If you have an irrigation system, don’t schedule it to run during hours where you or your family may be using more water than normal. For example, the morning when it is time to get ready for school, work, etc. Run the sprinklers overnight instead.

Garbage Down the Garbage Disposal

Your garbage disposal can be misleading. It isn’t made for garbage, large portions of food and it especially isn’t made for grease. This applies to any drain in your home, but many homeowners in the Dallas area feel more comfortable putting debris, grease and other items down the garbage disposal. Here is a short list of things to absolutely avoid putting down any drain:

  • Egg Shells
  • Coffee Grounds
  • Oils, Fats or Grease
  • Spaghetti
  • Paper Towels or Napkins
  • Car Fluid, like Anti-Freeze

Breaking the Faucet

We’ve all done it at some point…but don’t turn the faucet with greater force if it is dripping. When you apply too much pressure to your faucet it can break off or become loose. And then, you have a larger problem to solve. Instead, find the cause of the dripping faucet and form a solution, or just call us and we’ll take care of it.

Toys Down the Toilet

Kids are curious and they often pickup things and put them in places they don’t belong. Your toilet is no exception. Adults can be guilty too, sometimes socks, clothes, makeup or other items can accidentally fall in. To prevent the kids from dropping toys or other items down the toilet, you can get a toilet seat lock. Most hardware stores carry these and they are easy to install. For us adults, just be careful what you have around your toilet and it is a good practice to keep the lid shut when it isn’t in use.

Putting Back Together a Plumbing Fixture

Many homeowners attempt to fix an issue and may even be successful, but then they can’t get all the pieces back in the right place or in the correct order. To help prevent this issue, take photos before making any repairs. Make sure you take photos from several angles so when the time comes, you can more easily reassemble the pipes or other pieces you took a part.
